Disclaimer
Informational Use Only
PlainQuake presents earthquake data from the USGS Comprehensive Earthquake Catalog (ComCat) for general information and education. Nothing on this site constitutes professional engineering, geological, structural, insurance, financial, or emergency-management advice, and it should not be relied upon as a substitute for guidance from a qualified professional or an official authority.
Not an Emergency or Warning System
PlainQuake is a historical and reference data tool. It is not an earthquake early-warning system, a tsunami-alert service, or a real-time monitoring feed. Do not use this site to make safety, evacuation, or emergency decisions. For warnings and emergencies, rely on official channels such as the USGS Earthquake Hazards Program, USGS ShakeAlert, FEMA, and your local emergency management agency.
Data May Lag or Be Revised
Earthquake catalogs are living datasets. Magnitudes, locations, and depths are routinely refined after an event, and recent earthquakes may not yet appear on PlainQuake if they occurred after our most recent data refresh. Detection completeness also varies by region, so sparsely instrumented areas may have incomplete records for smaller earthquakes. Figures shown here carry no assurance of finality or completeness; for the official record, always consult the USGS directly.
No Prediction
Earthquakes cannot be reliably predicted. Nothing on PlainQuake, including counts, trends, rankings, or historical patterns, should be interpreted as a forecast of future seismic activity in any location.
